Dr. Marterella is Research and Development Director at the Center for Innovative OT Solutions (CIOTS). Abbey joined CIOTS due to her passion for finding cutting-edge, evidence-based solutions to complex problems facing occupational therapy and occupational science. Her background as a clinician, faculty member, and occupational scientist creates a unique skillset that allows her to address challenges from multiple vantage points. She enjoys conceptualizing and implementing novel research to advance the profession in concert with members of CIOTS’ team and CIOTS’ strategic partners. This involves building on her expertise in occupational science and intervention development research.
Prior to joining CIOTS, Abbey held faculty positions at the University of Southern California and Eastern Michigan University. She has over 2 decades of experience as an occupational therapist in a vast array of settings including: community mental health, jail diversion, adult inpatient and acute physical rehabilitation, home healthcare, and case management.
Abbey enjoys decorating and is particularly fond of repurposing lost treasures and materials. Recently, she created a lamp from an unusable antique Victrola phonograph and built a custom hula hoop from irrigation tubing. These creations arose as innovative solutions to problems — a need for inspired lighting and her inability to do tricks with a standard hoop.
